The late season rain in March (and continuing in April) has rescued Portugal from the state of ‘extreme drought’ that the majority of the country was facing in February. IPMA meteorological institute has said that 81.7% of the country has now receded to ‘moderate drought’. 15,9% remains in severe drought, and 2,4% in only ‘light drought’. According to the institute March was the 6th wettest since 2000, with an average rainfall of 102.5 mm, which is above the norm between 1971-2000. More rain is forecast for early next week.
