PORTIMÃO AND Lagos Câmaras plan to construct the largest international and inter-Câmara shooting range in the Algarve.
A meeting on Monday of the Associação dos Municípios da Ria de Alvor, the Ria de Alvor municipal association, which comprises the two Câmaras, led to the decision to carry out a study for choosing the location of the shooting range. The aim of this new facility is to host top level world competitions in this sport.
This project is being led by the President of the inter-municipal assembly, António Marreiros, whose mission it is to find an ideal location for an Olympic sized shooting range complex, complete with a hotel, restaurant, stands and infrastructure for journalists and organisers.
Prospective sites which have been put forward by both Câmaras as possible locations for the site include land surrounding the new racetrack and Portimão’s now disused municipal rubbish dump near the Porto de Lagos.
“We want to construct this facility to the highest level, including once again the involvement of private partners, among which I am sure will be hunting associations,” said Lagos Câmara President, Júlio Barroso.
He said that he believes there is great potential in this sport because of its tradition among the local community, including José Fortunato, a Portimão Câmara member, who is international champion in the sport.
