As the saying goes “it could have been a lot worse”. A large cow loose on the main Vila Real/Bragança road on the night of New Year collided with a BMW and “there was nothing the driver could do”.
The cow “was projected and died at the scene”, the BMW was “totally destroyed” but the 20-year-old driver and his friends on their way to a New Year’s party miraculously escaped serious injury.
According to news reports, two of them were treated locally in hospital, while a third, who suffers renal problems, had to be taken to a specialist unit in Bragança.
The “provenance of the cow”, however, remains a mystery.
Just over a year ago, there was a similar accident involving a loose horse near Évora – but this resulted in four deaths – three of them involving a mother, father and child.
The owner of the horse was never traced.
