Language courses at your fingertips

The University of the Algarve is offering language courses, which will commence on October 16 at the management, hotel and tourism school on the Penha campus in Faro.

Students, who would like to learn Portuguese, can either apply for a purely conversational class, which costs 175 euros and is aimed at more advanced Portuguese speakers or attend general Portuguese classes, which are taught at four different fluency levels, from beginner to advanced. These classes will run from October to January and consist of a two-hour lesson, twice a week. Each course is made up of 50 hours teaching time and costs 295 euros, including learning materials and a certificate. If students are unsure of their fluency level, a test can be sat to determine the appropriate class in which to be enrolled. The enrolment fee will be 30 euros. Another semester will commence in 2007, from February to May and can be applied for throughout January.

A range of other language courses will be on offer, but these will be taught by a Portuguese tutor, which may limit participation if you are not a Portuguese national or fluent in the Portuguese language.

A document translation service will be available in different languages, provided at competitive rates.

The campus itself is located near Faro hospital and the deadline for admissions for the coming semester is September 30. To apply for one of the courses, visit www.esght.ualg.pt/climt/cursoslinguas.htm where applicants can print out an application form and consult times of the different classes offered.
