Leading travel website Trip Advisor has named Lagos in the western Algarve as one of 15 rising destinations in the world based on feedback from customers.
Lagos, the only Portuguese destination on the list, also received a 2011 Traveller’s Choice award for its stunning beaches, alongside Albufeira and Alvor.
The three beach destinations were included in a total list of 25 European locations.
Other European beaches recognised included Ayia Napa in Cyprus and San Vito lo Capo in Italy as well as St Ives in the UK.
Lagos marina holds a blue five star award, the highest accolade from the International Marine Certification Institute (IMCI) for a high standard of water quality and attention to the environment.
Lagos was rated highly as a destination for a variety of qualities, including its history, choice of beaches, nightlife, dining and reliable transport system.
Out of 127 restaurants named for Lagos, Borsalino Italian Restaurant located at Urb. Rossio de S. João was ranked in first place.
Meia Preia beach was quoted as “a beach for all seasons” and the number one attraction to the town.
A total of 74 Algarvean beaches can be found on the Blue Flag website (www.blueflag.org) which sets recognised world standards for water quality, environmental awareness and safety as well as education.
Other world destinations that made it to the top five spots of the ’15 destinations on the rise’ were Hua Hin in Thailand, Tallinn in Estonia, Moscow in Russia and Bucharest in Romania.
Lagos Câmara said: “It should be noted that Trip Advisor manages 18 travel sites in 30 countries, receives about 65 million visitors per month and offers more than 50 million reviews to help travellers plan their holiday.”
