Volunteers at Lagos’ municipal kennels have gone public over claims that animals in council care are frequently mistreated and abused. Lagos council, however, refutes the allegations.
Speaking to Lusa news agency, animal lover Matilde Ramos went into detail about situations she says are commonplace.
She alleged bad hygiene and “slack attitudes” when it comes to giving animals medication, but the final straw came when the municipal vet is understood to have refused to treat a dog that had been brought to the kennel after being run over.
“We had to take the animal to a private veterinary clinic,” Ramos told Lusa, saying the situation was “incomprehensible”.
Lagos council’s Paulo Jorge Reis, responsible for the kennels, told Lusa that he has conducted an internal investigation and found nothing wrong.
Still, he guarantees the council is following the situation.
Meantime, official complaints by Ramos and another volunteer have already been lodged with Lagos police and the Public Prosecutor’s office.
