Cristina Silva won two medals at the Special Olympics World Games 2023
Lagos Council has honoured local equestrian athlete Cristina Silva, who won two medals while representing Portugal at the Special Olympics World Games which took place in Berlin, Germany between June 17 and 25.
Silva won a gold medal in the Working Trail event and a silver medal in the English Equitation event, having also finished fourth in the Dressage event.
To celebrate her achievements, the local council approved a vote of congratulations and praise for Silva as well as her coaches Ângela Mesquita and Sue Wilson from Riding for the Disabled Barlavento; Patrícia Viegas from NECI, a local association which provides support to people with disabilities, who accompanied Cristina Silva; and the athlete’s family for their “constant support.”
“The municipality, alongside the pride it feels for these podium achievements, highlights the satisfaction of seeing the commitment to ‘Sports for All’ (Desporto Para Todos) gradually being achieved, with more and more children, youth, and adults having the opportunity to engage in sports, regardless of their physical condition. This makes sports a strong instrument for individual overcoming and social inclusion,” the local council said in a statement.
