Lagos council slams closure of Bensafrim’s only bank

Lagos council has unanimously approved a motion condemning the closure of the only bank in Bensafrim.

The motion was presented by Lagos Mayor Hugo Pereira following a wave of protests from the Bensafrim and São João parish union.

As the council points out, the Crédito Agrícola bank had been open in Bensafrim for 30 years and was an “asset for the local population and provided support to local farmers” whilst also helping boost the local business sector.

The council believes that the bank’s closure will take its toll on the quality of life of local citizens and only aggravate the “isolation of one of the most important rural communities in the borough of Lagos”.

It adds that it is in contact with Crédito Agrícola in a bid to “find alternatives” and continue providing banking services to the local population.
