Lagos calls for urgent renovations to fishing port

Lagos Council has unanimously approved a motion condemning the rundown state of the town’s fishing port, calling on fishing authority Docapesca to carry out urgent renovations.

The port’s pier, storage area and toilets are highlighted as the areas that are most in need of repair work.

The motion calls for an upgrade to the port and safer working conditions for fishermen, “especially at a time when the sea economy, and fishing in particular, are highlighted as strategic options to increase the economic development of the country”.

Construction of the fishing port started in 1985 and its inauguration was held in 1987. It falls under the jurisdiction of Docapesca, the state’s fishing authority.
