Lagos battles Sines ports merger

It’s a motion proposed by the communists, but backed by the whole municipal assembly: Lagos is against the government plan to merge the Algarve ports administration with that of Sines. The move would effectively remove decision-making from the region, say opponents, and as such has generated widespread suspicion and discontent.
Suggesting that the government is “gagging” local entities from meaningful debate, the PCP communist party motion pushes for an Algarve Ports Authority instead. It claims this would have a much better chance of running local ports efficiently.
The motion received a unanimous thumbs-up at a recent municipal assembly meeting, and it now remains to be seen what answers come back from Lisbon.
One of the points raised by the PCP was that parliament actually “unanimously approved” a resolution recommending “the development of policies that properly organised the Algarve’s ports”. A decision, therefore, to move decision-making to a completely different region would appear to “fly in the face” of parliamentary recommendations.
