Lagoa’s candlelit market to pay tribute to Ibero-American culture

Candlelit market has become one of Lagoa’s biggest summer events

One of the Algarve’s most original events is just around the corner as Lagoa prepares for the eighth edition of ‘Mercado de Culturas à Luz das Velas’, a candlelit market which will take place from July 6 to 9.

Over 50,000 visitors are expected for this year’s edition of the market, which has become one of Lagoa’s biggest summer events.

A different culture is highlighted every year and this year will be no exception, with the theme being  ‘Cultures and Rituals of Ibero-America’.

Around 60 artisans will be exhibiting their works throughout the town, while several musical and dance performances are expected.

Among the confirmed acts are Son de Cuba (Cuba), Mariachi Mezcal (Mexico), Lídia Brandão, Grupo Muzenza, Batucada Som Brasil (Brazil), Viento Nuevo (Ecuador), La Porteña Tango (Argentina), and musician José Luís Pastor.

Visitors will also be able to explore seven areas with over 40 candlelit symbols, showcasing the “religions, traditions, gastronomy, and mythology of Ibero-American culture”.

These symbols will be placed at the entrances and throughout the market, creating a “visually stunning spectacle,” organisers say.

The São José convent’s exhibition room will house a photography exhibition entitled ‘(En)cantos do Brasil’, as well as an altar representing Mexico’s ‘Dia de Muertos’ dedicated to Frida Khalo.

The convent’s cloisters on the other hand will be transformed into a ‘Carioca’ bar featuring Brazilian cuisine. Outside the bar area, there will be picanha (Brazil’s popular cut of meat) on the grill and other culinary specialities.

The market area opens at 7pm and stays open until 12.30am, while the candles illuminating the symbols are lit at 8.30pm.. Admission is free.

Free parking is available near the Carlos do Carmo auditorium, in the area in front of Jacinto Correia school, and at the Fatacil fairground.

“Mercado de Culturas à Luz das Velas is an event of rare beauty that has attracted thousands of visitors in previous editions. I am convinced that this year will be the best edition ever, and I invite everyone to visit Lagoa during these days,” said Lagoa mayor Luís Encarnação.
