Many of the Algarve’s best young athletes took part in the ‘Festa de Atletismo’ at Estádio da Bela Vista in Parchal, Lagoa, on March 15.
Organisers said that around 1,600 students from 70 schools in the Algarve participated. Jumping, running and throwing were just some of the sporting events that took place.
The best-performing athletes will represent the Algarve at the ‘Mega Sprinter Nacional’ competition, which will take place in Faro on Friday and Saturday (April 5-6) and will bring together the country’s most promising young athletes.
In a statement sent to the press, Lagoa council said that the “excellent conditions of the athletics pitch at Bela Vista, coupled with the municipal strategy of promoting physical activity and sports, are some of the reasons why Lagoa was again chosen to host the event”.
‘Festa do Atletismo’ was organised by the regional commission of Desporto Escolar, the national authority that organises and promotes school sports, with the help of Lagoa council and the Algarve Athletics Association.
The competition was open to all state and private schools in the Algarve. It was attended by “many sports personalities, representatives from the different school groups involved and families”.
