Mural was painted by local street artist Huariu
A mural depicting an old photograph of Lagoa’s Rua Coronel Figueiredo has been painted onto the side of the town hall building in celebration of the municipality’s 250th anniversary.
The mural was painted by local artist Stephen Jones, better known in the artistic world as Huariu, who went viral after unveiling two giant paintings of F1 legends on a football pitch in Mexilhoeira Grande to celebrate the two F1 Grand Prix that were held in the Algarve in 2020 and 2021.
As the local council points out, Huariu is a “young artist who impresses anyone who sees his murals. While he is still young, he already has graffiti spread all over the world, including in the USA and several countries in Europe.”
One of his murals which he painted in Cambre, Spain in July 2022 was also recently nominated for the ‘Best of 2022’ award organised by online platform Street Art Cities.
“I thank Stephen for accepting painting the mural which marks an important date for Lagoa and the people of Lagoa, and I congratulate him on his extraordinary work,” said Lagoa mayor Luís Encarnação.
This is just one of the initiatives included in the borough’s 250th anniversary celebrations, which include conferences, workshops and other educational events which are bringing “researchers, decision-makers and thinkers” to Lagoa.
