Five speed skaters from the Lagoa-based sports club, Grupo Desportivo de Lagoa, will be representing the Portuguese national team at the World Roller Games which are taking place in Barcelona, Spain until July 14.
Carolina Ferreira, Andreia Canha, Duarte Souza, Mariana Melo and Manuel Martins together account for nearly half of the national team that will be seeking glory at the WRC, the world’s largest event comprising all the world championship roller sports disciplines.
Before leaving for the competition, the five athletes visited the town hall and were received by Deputy Mayor Luís Encarnação who wished them luck and highlighted the development of the sport in Lagoa.
The World Roller Games will see more than 4,000 athletes in action and will crown the world’s best in 11 disciplines: Alpine, Artistic, Roller Freestyle, Downhill, Inline Freestyle, Inline Hockey, Rink Hockey, Roller Derby, Scooter, Speed and Skateboarding.
