Lagoa pledges €3 million for new retirement home

New retirement home will create accommodation for 70 elderly residents

Lagoa Municipal Council is contributing €3 million to the construction of a new retirement home in the municipality.

The borough’s new Elderly Residential Facility will be built on a 4,455sqm plot of land provided by the local council near the Fazenda Grande urbanisation in Mexilhoeira da Carregação.

The facility will be able to accommodate 70 residents and provide home care support to another 60 in the parishes of Estômbar and Parchal, says the local council in a statement to the press.

The €6 million project is led by the Association of Sports and Recreation – Cultural and Social Centre of Quinta de S. Pedro (ADR) which has successfully applied for funding via Portugal’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), which will cover 50% of the costs. The municipal council then stepped in to cover the remainder. Construction works are expected to last two years.

Lagoa Mayor, Luís Encarnação, has dubbed the signing of the contract between ADR and construction firm ‘Teixeira, Pinto & Soares, SA.’ which has paved the way for the start of construction as an “important moment for Lagoa and its residents.”

“Together, let us ensure the care and support for those who once cared for us,” the mayor added.
