Lagoa has congratulated local handball player Tiago Cantigas for being a part of the national team which last weekend won the first World and European Wheelchair Handball Championship.
The event was held in Leiria between November 18 and 20 and saw Portugal overcome Netherlands, Romania and India in the group stage to finish in first place.
In the semi-finals, Portugal beat India yet again to face Netherlands in the final and secure the title with a 18-10 win.
“I want to congratulate Tiago Cantigas on his path in the national team, which reached its highest level with the victory at the World and European Championship. It makes Lagoa and the people of Lagoa very proud to see him winning these trophies,” said Lagoa mayor Luís Encarnação.
Tiago Cantigas, 32, is a GNR police agent and has played for three seasons for Casa do Povo de São Bartolomeu de Messines.
