A lack of new intake entering the teaching profession signals “an academic pandemic” that is already affecting education. This is the opinion of social sciences expert, Carlos Ceia, who has been on air lamenting the fact that no political party’s election manifestos appear to have any ideas on how to resolve the problem. The Universidade Nova de Lisboa has just completed a study in which it concludes that because of teacher retirements coming up in the next few years, 34,500 new professionals will be needed by 2030/2031, yet recruitment drives, needed now to train these people, are not happening.
