Lack of staff at Porto’s IPO cancer hospital sees nurses request ‘excuse of responsibility’

Nurses are increasingly putting in requests for ‘excuse of responsibility’ due to the extreme shortage of staff at Porto IPO cancer hospital’s emergency unit. Following on from stories in the press yesterday, it now appears the hospital is lacking over 400 healthcare professionals – the majority of them nurses. ‘Excuse of responsibility’ is a mechanism by which nurses will be legally covered in the event of their making mistakes in the care of patients, due to a situation of being overworked and understaffed.
