Knock-down prices set to attract thousands to movie theatres this week

Cinema tickets will cost just €2.50 at nearly 500 movie theatres from today to Wednesday (May 16-18), as part of Portugal’s second “Festa de Cinema” designed to put wind under the wings of the country’s welcome return to film-going.

“This festival gives people, who otherwise might not be able to, a chance to discover the magic of movie theatres,” Paulo Santos from Portugal’s cinema companies association (APEC) said.

Last year’s ‘Festa do Cinema’ was hailed one of the reasons why 2015 was the “best year for Portuguese movie theatres since 1975” (click here), showing a 20% increase in audience numbers and revenue.

According to data from Portugal’s cinema and audiovisual institute (ICA), the recovery made Portugal the European country with the largest increase in ticket sales, and gave what many thought to be a dying industry a welcome new boost.

A list of the movies that will be screening in the Algarve during the festival can be seen in our May 12 edition.
