Keep on running to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month

AS IN previous years, the Mamamaratona 5 will be a five kilometre or eight kilometre run or walk to support the fight against breast cancer in the Algarve.

This year, it will be held on Sunday, October 16, along the Arade riverside in Portimão, starting and finishing at ExpoArade, the fair and exhibition park, in which the Better Living in Portugal Exhibition (BLiP) will be taking place.

The Algarve Cancer Association, with the help of previous Mamamaratona events, was able to buy the mobile mammography unit this year and the Algarve’s first breast screening programme started in Alcoutim (read The Resident’s edition of September 26). The unit has now moved on to Castro Marim before travelling throughout the Algarve. Mamamaratona 5 aims to raise awareness of breast cancer and the importance of the screening programme.

The event combines the run/walk with many other activities, including family entertainment, celebrity appearances, a visit to BLiP, and food and drink for everyone to enjoy.

Registration will take place at Expoarade on Saturday, October 15, from 10.30am to 6pm, and Sunday, October 16, from 8am to 9.45am, with the run/walk starting at 10am. For entry forms visit www.mamamaratona.com or call 282 089 420 (English, German and Dutch) or 289 807 531 (Portuguese).
