Justice minister fears Socialist victory

Justice minister Paula Teixeira da Cruz has put a new spin on the controversy caused by the outspoken comments of former President of the Republic Mário Soares (see: https://www.portugalresident.com/m%C3%A1rio-soares-back-in-the-not-so-hot-seat).

She claims they point to a threat posed by a future Socialist government.

Talking at the end of a parliamentary debate, she told reporters that she feared “a limitation” when it came to the separation of powers, if the Socialists returned to power in October’s legislative elections.

Alluding directly to Soares’ tirade directed recently at judge Carlos Alexandre, in charge of Operation Marquês that has seen former Socialist leader José Sócrates behind bars for more than two months, Teixeira da Cruz said it worried her hugely to “hear the founder of the Socialist Party affirm what he affirmed”.
