Justice minister admits ‘social discomfort’ over flight from justice of former bank boss

In perhaps the understatement of the week, Justice minister Francisca van Dunem has admitted citizens may feel “great social discomfort” over news that former bank boss João Rendeiro – convicted of fraud, tax evasion and money laundering on a grand scale – has flown out of the country just as he was due to be put in jail (click here). Hours after her admission, Correio da Manhã’s front page claimed Mr Rendeiro has managed to ‘hide’ €21 million in offshore havens.
