From July 25 until 29, the annual Festival do Caracol (snail festival) will take place in Porches.
The traditional gastronomic delights, Caracóis, are not only reasonably priced but known to the majority of Portuguese people as flavourful snacks.
Particularly in the summer months, increased snail growth takes place in southern Portugal due to the increased heat and humidity, which is why this festival is annually held in July.
The Caracóis are traditionally cooked in a broth of oregano, laurel, thyme, garlic, onion, olive oil, salt and pepper and piri piri, then are sucked from their shells, or alternatively removed with a tooth-pick.
A wide range of nationlities unite at the event and enjoy traditional food, drinks and music together.
