Just deserts

England’s Paul Casey put a winless 2008 PGA European season behind him when holding on for victory in the Abu Dhabi Championship.

The 31-year-old had stormed into a commanding lead following a third round 63 but then frittered away a six-shot advantage with only eight holes to play. At the death his 240th career title came by one stroke from the rapidly closing Martin Kaymer and Louis Oosthuizen, who shared second while Ulster teenage sensation Rory McIlroy posted another top-five finish to rise to 35th in the world.

Across the Atlantic, Zach Johnson captured the second US PGA Tour event of the season, the Sony Open on Maui, with a 265-stroke 15-under-par total.
