JUNIOR/TRAINEE REPORTER

If you are young, enthusiastic, speak and write English and Portuguese fluently and have a current driving licence then read on.

The Resident is a weekly English language newspaper now in its 18th year of publication.

We are looking for an additional person who has ambition and is not afraid of hard work to join our team in Lagoa.

Experience in a newspaper environment would be ideal, but training will be given to the right applicant. You will need to be a talented self-starter with lots of energy and enthusiasm and be brimming with creative ideas that will add value and readership to our print and online news and features. Applicants will need to live in the Algarve and be legal to work in Portugal.

Job purpose/responsibilities

To write to deadline as laid down by the editor.

To write in news or features style as laid down by the editor.

To ensure copy is accurate, legal & written to length.

To deal confidently with news assignments, challenging assertions and analysing facts.

To keep up to speed with national & regional current affairs.

To hold a current driving licence.

To speak Portuguese.

COMMERCIAL AWARENESS/ JOB DIMENSIONS

To spot advertisement/ advertisement feature opportunities from news stories.

To spot ‘added value’ opportunities for reader offers/ competitions to accompany editorial material.

To display legal awareness to minimise the risk of litigation affecting The Resident.

To understand the role of an individual story in the editorial process and the importance of liaison with other members of the editorial team.

To seek out ‘off-diary’ stories to provide exclusive copy that retains The Resident’s market edge.

To be aware of The Resident’s commercial aims.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

To write legally and to length, news/ features/ sport/ business/ leisure/ advertising features or any other copy for The Resident or any associated publication as directed by the editor.

To provide copy for The Resident website.

To represent The Resident in an ambassadorial role.

To establish and maintain an up-to-date contacts book relevant to day-to-day work.

To understand The Resident’s deadlines & circulation areas.

To carry out interviews in person and by telephone.

To work closely with photographers on assignment and suggest illustrations for stories from a variety of sources.

Read national, regional and local newspapers and become aware of local angles to national events/ stories.
