July welcomes best of jazz to Loulé

THIS MONTH sees the city of Loulé host one of the largest musical events in the country – the Festival Internacional de Jazz de Loulé, now in its 12th year. Once again, the Cerca do Convento Espírito Santo will play host to some of the jazz scene’s greatest performers. The format this year is slightly different, as concerts will only take place on Saturdays at 10pm.

The festival gets underway on July 8, with a performance from Synthesis, one of the most prestigious university jazz orchestras in America. The orchestra boasts 19 members and will be directed by Ray Smith. Synthesis combines various styles including jazz, blues and swing. Known for its spontaneity and creativity, the orchestra has received several awards and often performs at festivals worldwide.

The music continues on July 15 with two distinctly different performances: the classic vocal talent of Fátima Serro with the Trupe Vocal, and the hot Brazilian inspired jazz of Tuniko Goulart.

On July 22, there will be a double concert that includes a performance from the contemporary Mário Santos Jazz Quintet and by TGB (Frazão/Carolino Delgado), one of the most unexpected pairings on the current scene.

To close the festival, on July 29, there will be a performance from E.S.T. (Esbjorn Svensson Trio), a group that has revolutionised the traditional concept of a jazz trio. The Swedes present a combination of jazz with drum and bass, funk, pop-rock and classical music, a style that has enabled them to conquer younger fans, as well as traditional jazz lovers.

The festival is being organised by Casa da Cultura de Loulé with the support of the council. For further information and tickets, call 289 415 860 or e-mail [email protected]
