Two thieves who nearly ran over a GNR officer while trying to escape in a car after being caught stealing from a vehicle in Tavira have been released by a judge until trial.
The individuals were stealing from a tourists’ car parked by Barril beach when detected by the GNR last Thursday.
When the thieves noticed the GNR approaching, they escaped from the scene in a vehicle and in the process nearly ran over an officer, ignoring warning shots.
The car was stopped when a police vehicle blocked it. One of the thieves was arrested on the spot but the other escaped on foot and was detained hours later while waiting for a taxi at a restaurant along the EN125.
The individuals have to report weekly to the local police station until their trial.
