José Mourinho reaches sixth European final

Mourinho, AKA ‘The Special One’, has won five European trophies

Portuguese manager José Mourinho has qualified for his sixth European football final after leading AS Roma to a 1-0 aggregate win over Bayer Leverkusen in the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League on Thursday night.

A 1-0 home win in the first leg was followed by a 0-0 draw, which secured the Italian side a place in the final where it will face Seville.

It’s an immense joy to get to another final,” Mourinho told Sky Sports after the match.

“My concern isn’t marking my place in the Roma history books. It’s helping these kids to grow and achieve important things. It’s also helping the Roma fans who have given me so much since day one,” the 60-year-old manager said.

Mourinho has won all five of the European finals in which the teams he has coached have appeared (excluding Super Cup appearances) – a UEFA Cup and Champions League for Porto (2002/2003 and 2003/2004); a UEFA Champions League for Inter (2009/2010); UEFA Europa League for Manchester United (2016/2017); and last year’s win in the inaugural edition of the UEFA Conference League in his first season at AS Roma.
