José Mourinho misses out on sixth European trophy

Portuguese manager José Mourinho failed to add a sixth European trophy to his resumé last night after AS Roma lost the Europa League final in a dramatic penalty shootout to Seville FC.

With a 1-1 draw at the end of the 90 minutes, the two teams had to play overtime and were unable to score a winning goal, leaving the decision to be made in a penalty shootout won by the Spanish side, which converted four as opposed to Roma’s one.

In his previous five European final appearances (excluding UEFA Super Cups), Mourinho had won every single final: a UEFA Cup and Champions League for Porto (2002/2003 and 2003/2004); a UEFA Champions League for Inter (2009/2010); UEFA Europa League for Manchester United (2016/2017); and last year’s win in the inaugural edition of the UEFA Conference League in his first season at AS Roma.
