José Mourinho gets street named after him in Setúbal

Portuguese football manager José Mourinho has had a street named after him in his hometown of Setúbal.

The Manchester United boss was back home on Tuesday to see the former Rua da Saude road on the seafront renamed as ‘Avenida Jose Mourinho’ in recognition of his achievements in football.

Following the ceremony, Mourinho told reporter how proud he felt to see his hometown pay tribute to his career.

“If you ask me if I’m grateful, excited and proud, yes of course I am. I say yes to everything,” he told reporters.

“I come to Setúbal because I love Setúbal. I have my mother here and I feel closer to my father. I come to Setúbal because my children have never lived here and love Setúbal as much or more than I do.

“It is the only city where I feel like myself, where I feel like ‘Zé Mario’, where I walk on the street and people treat me like I like to be treated.”

Local mayor Maria das Dores Meira described Mourinho as a “son of Setúbal, a man of the world, a global personality… one of those Setubalenses who fill us with pride because he is really special, has a special talent, special love for their land”.

José Mourinho has won eight league titles in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain. His list of achievements also includes two Champions League and two Europa League/UEFA Cup titles.
