Jorge Jesus, the new boss at Sporting Lisbon, is no stranger to the Algarve. It was 40 years ago that, as a young Sporting Lisbon player, he was loaned to SC Olhanense and made his Primeira Liga debut in the red and black striped shirt of the Olhão-based club.
Playing in midfield, he made 29 appearances and found the back of the net on five occasions. Nine years later, towards the end of his playing career, he joined Farense and played 24 games for the Faro club in their first season back in the Primeira Liga.
In his first season (2009-10) in charge at Benfica he won the League Cup with a 3-0 win over FC Porto at the Algarve Stadium. So Jorge Jesus continues his winning run in the Algarve, as the green and white half of the capital continue to celebrate their first piece of silverware under their new coach. C.W.
