João Sousa is Portugal’s first tennis player to reach third round of Wimbledon

João Sousa has made history by becoming the first Portuguese tennis player to qualify for the third round of Wimbledon, one of the sport’s most prestigious tournament.

The historic feat was achieved yesterday (June 30) after a tough match against USA’s Dennis Novikov.

Sousa, placed 31st in the ATP world ranking, proved his worth and won the match in four sets: 6-4, 6-4, 3-6 and 6-4.

The 27-year-old from Guimarães will now face Jiri Vesely, 64th, who took everyone by surprise by eliminating eighth-seeded Dominic Thiem.

The match will be held tomorrow.
