The defence team of jailed ‘bankster’ João Rendeiro is bidding for bail, accusing the judge who refused it just before Christmas of having been “influenced by national and international press coverage”. Indeed, defence lawyer June Marks has said judge Rajesh Parshotam “deceived himself and made a mistake” believing that if he did grant Mr Rendeiro bail he would undermine confidence in the South African legal system (click here). The bid now will be considered. Mr Rendeiro has been in the notorious Westville Prison since December 13.
