João Fernandes has been re-elected president of the Algarve Tourism Association (ATA) – the entity responsible for promoting the Algarve abroad.
Fernandes, who is also president of the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA) – the entity in charge of promoting the region within Portugal –, will thus continue to lead the region’s two most important tourism entities.
The election was never a competition as Fernandes was the only candidate running. He won with 90 votes in favour, one null vote and one blank vote.
“I am very happy about this re-election and the opportunity to, together with my board colleagues and the professionals of ATA, be able to continue the project we started in 2018 and which has proved to be a winning one, even during one of the most critical periods the tourism sector has ever known,” said Fernandes.
“The next few years will certainly continue to be very challenging and demanding times for tourism in the Algarve, but I am confident that this team will know how to maintain the same combative spirit to continue overcoming obstacles with success, dedication and a lot of creativity,” he added.
In a statement to the press, the association’s new board says that the “future of the external promotion of the region” will involve continuing to diversify what the Algarve has to offer and consolidating the Algarve’s “international reputation as an authentic and higher quality tourism destination.”
It adds that the success of this strategy will rely on the involvement of the many agents of the tourism sector around this “common goal,” including those from all corners of the Algarve.
