João Fernandes has been re-elected president of the Algarve Tourism Association (ATA) – the entity responsible for promoting the Algarve abroad.
Fernandes, who is also president of the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA) – the entity in charge of promoting the region within Portugal –, will thus continue to lead the region’s two most important tourism entities.
The election was never a competition as Fernandes was the only candidate running for the position. He won with 90 votes in favour, one null vote and one blank vote.
“I am delighted by this re-election as I, along with my colleagues, will be able to continue the project we started in 2018 and which has proved to be a winning one, even during one of the most critical periods the tourism sector has ever known,” said Fernandes.
“The next few years will continue to be challenging for tourism in the Algarve, but I feel confident that our team will continue to overcome obstacles with success, dedication and a lot of creativity,” he added.
In a statement to the press, the association’s new board says plans for the future are to continue to diversify what the Algarve has to offer and consolidate the region’s “international reputation as an authentic, quality tourism destination”.
The success of this strategy, says ATA, will rely on the cooperation of partners in the sector in achieving this “common goal”.
