‘João’ and ‘Maria’ still most popular

João is the most popular name chosen for baby boys baptised in 2013. Data from the births registry shows that the well-worn name of six of the nation’s kings – which slipped from its number one position in 2009 – is now well and truly back in style, with 1,867 boys given the name last year, followed hotly by the popularity of Rodrigo (1,841) and Martim (1,715). At the opposite end of the gender scale, Maria is still the most popular name for girls, with 4,490 named after the mother of Jesus. The second most popular girl’s name was Leonor (1,838) followed by Matilde (1,492).
