The second JJW Cup golf tournament was held between October 24 and 28 and was once again hailed a resounding success by organisers.
Following the success of last year’s event, the 2018 tournament was extended to run for five days.
“With the success of the cup in 2017, this year we wanted to consolidate the event and gift our participants with the inclusion of the renowned Sir Henry Thomas Cotton Championship in Penina Hotel & Golf Resort. Besides presenting a challenge for the participants, it is an emblematic field, full of history, and is the ‘cradle’ of golf in the Algarve,” said Sandra Matos, Regional Director of Sales and Marketing for the JJW group in Portugal.
The event’s programme was tailored for those who love golf: the Championship Course at Penina Hotel & Golf Resort was the venue for the Pro-Am event, which marked the start of the cup. The remaining three days were divided between the courses of San Lorenzo Golf Course and Pinheiros Altos Golf Course (with participants staying at the Dona Filipa Hotel).
There were many surprises during the event, including a masterclass led by Chef Bruno Oliveira who explained how to make a tartar and tuna tataki and a wine tasting workshop with sommelier João Branco.
The programme also includes test drives with BMW’s new electric models and “golf clinics for non-golfers and chaperones”.
The Penina Pro-Am competition and JJW Cup were played by teams of four players, three amateurs and one professional. The winning team of José Lourenço, Adolfo Pinto Leite, John Edwards and Maria Luísa Pereira da Silva totalled 79 points.
The JJW CUP awards ceremony took place in the Clubhouse of Pinheiros Altos, with winners being Serafim Carvalho (gross) and Nuno de Encarnação Carmo (net).
Given yet another successful edition of the event, the third edition has already been marked on next year’s calendar and will be held between October 22 and 27, 2019, maintaining the same format.
Rúben Paula, Chief Operating Officer of JJW Hotels & Resorts, highlights the importance of this event in the group’s strategy.
“We believe in the potential of the event and, taking into account the success of the 2017 and 2018 editions, we believe that we are on the way to making this a leading golf event in Portugal.”
He added: “JJW Hotels & Resorts will continue to strive to raise the standards of golf excellence in the Algarve”.
