Lisbon’s Jewish community has been commemorating the first centenary of the inauguration of ‘Shaare Tikva’ synagogue.
On September 7, celebrations opened with an exhibition entitled Books and Documents of the Portuguese Jews in the 19th and 20th centuries. The exhibition was staged in the Telecom Forum, followed by a series of talks over a two-day period in the same location. The Portuguese Association of Jewish Studies organised both events.
On September 9, at 6.30pm, a religious ceremony in the synagogue was due to take place to mark its reopening after extensive restoration works. President Sampaio and the Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel, Shlomo Moshe Amar, were lined up to attend the ceremony. On September 15 the community will celebrate the Jewish New Year.
