Jeremy Corbyn to visit Portugal in support of Costa’s anti-austerity programme

Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the UK’s Labour Party, is due to visit Portugal in support of prime minister António Costa’s anti-austerity programme, reports the Morning Star – the world’s only socialist daily newspaper.

The announcement, made on Boxing Day, is not specific as to a date, saying only that Corbyn has struck up a friendship with Costa and envisages a European anti-austerity coalition.

It is a mindset that reflects Costa’s own views that now is the time for a “new era” in Portugal.

In his Christmas message to the nation, Costa talked about “a change that will turn the page on austerity and place Portugal on the path of growth. A change that breaks with the cycle of impoverishment and returns hope for a better future”.

The expression “new era” was repeated several times during Costa’s speech, which also welcomed refugees and established the “promise” to create the right conditions that could see those who have emigrated for a better life choosing to return.
