Jardim denies he is to stand down

PRESIDENT of Madeira, Alberto João Jardim, said that last week’s revelations that he was planning to stand down as head of the island’s government were without foundation.

The Diário de Notícias da Madeira newspaper announced last week that the President of Madeira would resign his post to cause elections.

The long-time PSD leader of the archipelago admitted that his resignation could be possible, in view of the PS government’s institutional attack on the autonomous region, but that his election promise to the people of Madeira for the next four years would make it unlikely.
