Jailed GNR gets support of online petition

Meantime, there is good news for the Loures cop jailed for nine years for killing a child in a police chase.
Hugo Ernano was jailed last year – and ordered to pay €80,000 in costs to the child’s parents – after shots he fired at a getaway car hit the thief’s young son who was riding along with his father.
Since the court ruling, Ernano has been supported by an online petition of 85,000 people calling for his release, and now the Lisbon appeal court has heard Ministry of Justice prosecutor Varela de Matos defend Ernano’s case.
Presenting his opinions on Thursday, June 19, Varela de Matos said: “I cannot agree with the decision of the Loures Court. It is becoming a habit to turn against agents of authority. How is it that someone could go out to commit a robbery and take along a gun and his own underage son?”
The court’s final decision is expected to come on June 26, but Ernano has told newspapers that he is “confident” that justice will be done.
