Perhaps the most famous participant in this year’s Vale do Lobo Grand Champions tennis tournament is 33-year-old Jim Courier, the winner of 23 titles and the replacement for fellow American John McEnroe.
The popular seniors’ tournament takes place between Tuesday August 3 and Friday August 6, the day of the final. The line-up for this year’s competition also features Dutch player Richard Krajicek, who has won 17 titles and who is the youngest contender at 32. Other players to look out for are former Wimbledon champion and last year’s Vale do Lobo champion, Michael Stich.
Spain’s Emilio Sanchez, the winner of 15 titles, Britain’s Jeremy Bates, who won the 2001 Vale do Lobo event, and the Portuguese player, João Cunha e Silva. Two of the most entertaining players from last year’s event are also returning – Frenchmen Henri Leconte and Yannick Noah.
Tickets (at various prices) are available at Vale do Lobo Tennis Academy reception, or via the internet on www.grandchampions.org
