It’s as you were at the Boavista Charity Day

news: It’s as you were at the Boavista Charity Day

IF THE winners of the Boavista Charity Day had a familiar look about them, it was because three of them were in the winners’ enclosure last year! The winning team, appropriately named ‘3 Studs and a Babe’ – Paul Meyer, Lori Arnold, Joost Rombouts and Nelson Bayford – won the event by four clear points.

Joost’s wife Marijke, who played in last year’s event, was unavailable this year as she was a member of the organising committee, but she had given strict instructions to the team to do everything they could to retain the title and they did so in style with 96 stableford points. Runners-up, Boavista’s Best – Kathy Finch, Phil Pope, Simon Cash and Paul Wright – were leaders in the clubhouse on 92 points for most of the afternoon, but were overtaken by the eventual winners, who were one of the last groups to come in.

There were plenty of prizes to be won, not least a top of the range Hill Billy electric golf trolley, won by John Ashford of the Carvoeiro Sandpipers. But, of course, the main purpose of the event was to raise money for the two chosen charities, Lagos Orphanage and Pirilampos Orphanage in Albufeira.

In all, the magnificent total of 15,517 euros was raised on the day. Club Captain Steve Dodds remarked: “When we set out to organise this event, I hoped that we could achieve a five figure sum and to surpass that target by more than 50 per cent is a credit to all those who have assisted with the organisation or taken part. Special mention must be made of the Boavista ladies cake and bottle stall, which raised over 700 euros, the Hill Billy raffle, which almost raised 900 euros, and the peripheral competitions and mini auction organised by the members, which contributed a further 990 euros.” He went on to say: “We have also had tremendous support from the business community in terms of sponsorship. There was a sponsor for every hole and this enabled us to get the event off to a great start and I would just like to say a big thank you to everyone who was involved.”
