US Open first round losers Rui Machado and Frederico Gil were in action in Genoa this week.
The Portuguese No1 from Faro, who is now ranked 78 in the world, disposed of Renzo Oliva and Daniele Giorgini before going down 6-3, 7-6 to quarter-final opponent Leonardo Mayer, while Gil went one better in reaching the last four.
Meanwhile, back in New York, world No1 Novak Djokovic capped an amazing five-set semi-final comeback victory over Roger Federer by overwhelming Rafael Nadal 6-2, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 in the title match to capture his third Grand Slam of the season.
There was also a debut Flushing Meadows success in the ladies draw for Samantha Stosur, the 27-year-old Australian making short work of defeating home favourite Serena Williams 6-2, 6-3.
