Islanders gear-up for new “day in parliament” to fight “surprise” demolitions

Ria Formosa islanders are preparing for a new showdown to save their homes, following the “surprise” announcement that another 22 properties face the wrecking ball (click here).

Buoyed by support from the government’s allies Bloco de Esquerda and PCP communists, they have sent out a call to all supporters to rally in Lisbon on Friday (February 23) when “various proposals and initiatives” are due to be discussed in parliament.

“Together, we are stronger” is the message as this perennial drama reaches yet another ‘crunch point’: eviction orders expect everyone out of the homes on Farol and Hangares communities by next Tuesday (February 27), despite the fact that this was never meant to be on the table (click here).

The call asks anyone interested in lending support to get in touch with the communities’ residents associations, or with Vanessa Morgado of campaign group SOS Ria Formosa.

Alternatively, a newsagents in Olhão (Sr Cabrita in the Avenida) is taking reservations for the bus trip to the capital.
