AN ISLAMIC column has been uncovered during excavations carried out as part of the ongoing work to remodel the Praça da República in Tavira. The Instituto Português de Arqueologia (IPA), the Portuguese archaeological institute, has been notified of the discovery. However, tools will not be downed. President of Tavira Câmara, Macário Correia, who is responsible for the infrastructure, has ensured that the discovery has only affected the work being carried out in one corner of the square, thus not altering the timetable for the project, which will be finished in May, as planned. The IPA is now studying the find and evaluating its patrimonial value.
