Ireland’s Independent newspaper is the latest international publication to fall head over heels for the Algarve, publishing an article about how the town of Albufeira is the region’s “sunny pearl” and boasts the “best beaches”.
Writer Gerry O’Carroll has been to Portugal several times, but this time decided to go for something different from sight-seeing tours and instead relax in the Algarve’s most popular town for holidaymakers.
“And what a good choice I made,” O’Carroll says.
“Albufeira – a perennial favourite with Irish holidaymakers – was originally a little fishing town. It’s built high on the cliffs with golden stretches of beaches below.
“It still has the quaint fishing village atmosphere with the little white houses on the cliffs, but in more recent years the town has been expanded into a wonderful resort with lots of restaurants and hotels and a beautiful new marina,” the travel writer says.
O’Carroll then details his trip, including trips to local beaches, museums and water parks.
The writer also made a list of his favourite Algarve beaches, which includes Praia da Marinha and Praia do Carvoeiro (Carvoeiro), Praia da Falésia (Albufeira) and Ilha de Tavira (Tavira).
