Irish Ambassador plans first Algarve visit

Irish Ambassador to Portugal Dr Declan O’Donovan will be the guest of honour at the St Patrick’s Day celebrations in the Algarve on March 12.

A dinner to mark the occasion will be taking place at the Holiday Inn Algarve in Armação de Pêra and Ambassador O’Donovan will be using the occasion to introduce himself to members of the Irish community in the Algarve for the first time.

Declan O’Donovan joined the Irish foreign office in the 1970s and worked in positions in New York, New Delhi and Belfast before being appointed ambassador to Japan in 1995.

Since then, he has held the position of Ambassador in Spain, Tunisia and Poland before coming to Portugal.

This will be the first trip to the Algarve for Declan O’Donovan as Ambassador and he will be welcomed on the evening by the chairman of the St Patrick’s Society of the Algarve, Sean Walkin, himself a retired former Irish consul in Africa.

The St Patrick’s Day dinner is open to all nationalities, members and guests with formal dress requested but an emphasis on having a “good craic”.

Admission costs €30 for members and €35 for non-members.
