International Women’s Day

March 8 marks International Women’s Day, with this year being the centenary of the concept which celebrates the achievements of women and pushes for equality of opportunities and equal rights.

Women grow 70% of the world’s food, perform 60% of the world’s labour yet only receive 10% of the world’s income.

The theme for the International Women’s Movement in 2011 is Equal access to education, training and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women and in Tavira there will be several activities to mark the women’s movement.

On March 8, women will be gathering in the riverside gardens in Tavira between 2pm and 5pm wearing purple scarves to show their solidarity, while there will be an exhibition of unforgettable women from the past 100 years at the 3EB Dr Jorge Correia School between March 14 and 18.

Finally, a social evening with poems and songs inspired by women will be taking place on March 16 from 8.30pm, also at the 3EB Dr Jorge Correia School.
