International golf travel market may return

EIGHT YEARS after it was first hosted in Vilamoura, one of the most important events in the golfing sector, the International Golf Travel Market, may return to the Algarve.

An application to host the event in 2008 has been presented to the president of the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO), Peter Walton, by the president of the Algarve Tourism Board, Hélder Martins and the president of the Algarve Golf Association, António da Silva.

Before the Algarve can be selected, however, the UK based IAGTO will need to send a team to the Algarve to evaluate the necessary facilities and accommodation to host the event.

“The objective behind holding this travel fair is to turn the Algarve into an international destination for golf by promoting the region and its multifaceted tourist offer to specialist operators”, said Hélder Martins.

This year, the Algarve was elected Best Golf Destination in the World by the IAGTO.
